The Arya Samaj is a socio-cultural organization founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. It is not a separate religion but a reform movement within Hinduism. The mission of the Samaj is to mold the lives of its members and all others according to the message of the Vedas with reference to the circumstances of time and place.

Swami Dayanand came at a time when the pure Vedic traditions of scientific adventure, spiritual exploration, philosophical inquiry, intuitive vision, social experimentation and moral renewal had been closed. Indeed, there was a defensive wall of elaborate ritual, rigid custom, empty formulae, and ridiculous superstition.

Swami Dayanand challenged superstition on the one hand and pseudo-modernity on the other. He wanted to redeem the original knowledge of the Vedas, rejuvenate the society and point the way to a dynamic modernity through constant renewal by education. ‘Back to the Vedas for the message’, he said, ‘look round and remodel the forms of living for the material, spiritual and social progress of the world’. He founded the Arya Samaj for the realization of its new program.

The Arya Samaj is a voluntary organization working across the world for physical, moral, spiritual and professional education, eradication of superstition, inculcation of universal values, comparative study of cultures, religious and social systems, with open inquiry and debate for the propagation of truth. The organization is thoroughly democratic and works on the basis of the ten principles formulated by the founder. The principles are universal and have no tinge of sectarianism at all.

Arya Samaj is a spiritual way of living with a universal message of peace and happiness. Its ethos is captured in its ten guiding principles based on Vedic teachings that point to a better living.

Arya Samaj is a global phenomenon that attracts the young and old alike, sometimes from other religions, for its simple, logical and contemporary thinking on God, spirituality and values of life. It finds resonance with educated, middle-class professionals as it revolts against the horrors of organised religion.

Arya Samaj promotes true Indian culture and national spirit; instilling feelings of pride and patriotism for country.

He is good and wise who always speaks the truth, acts on the dictates of virtue, and tries to make others good and happy. – Swami Dayanand Sarswati

Arya Samaj

Hindu reformist Swami Dayanand Saraswati revolutionised Indian religion and is considered as one of the ‘Makers of Modern India’.

Swami Dayanand established the Arya Samaj on April 7, 1875 in Bombay, with 10 principles that are beautifully based purely on God, soul and nature. The organisation brought about immense changes in the religious perceptions of Indians.
Swami Dayananda’s creation, the Arya Samaj, is a unique contribution in Hinduism. The Arya Samaj unequivocally condemns idol-worship, animal sacrifices, ancestor worship, pilgrimages, priestcraft, offerings made in temples, the caste system, untouchability, child marriages and discrimination against women on the grounds that all these lacked Vedic sanction. The Arya Samaj discourages dogma and symbolism and encourages skepticism in beliefs that run contrary to common sense and logic. To many people, the Arya Samaj aims to be a “universal church” based on the authority of the Vedas.

Hindu Vedic Vivah Sanskaar

The Wedding Sacrament (Vivah Sanskaar) is the most important among the sixteen Vedic sacraments. It is a divinely ordained institution that forms the very basis for a coordinated family life. It seeks to bring two souls together into a composite whole, in fulfillment of cosmic purpose and plan. When we observe the functioning of the universe, we see an eternally harmonious relationship between the sun and moon, heaven and earth and all the other cosmic pairs.

Vedic Hindu marriage is viewed as sacramental, which is a lifelong commitment of one wife and one husband. It is the strongest bond between a man and a woman, which takes place in the presence of their parents, relatives, and friends. This an irrevocable commitment for a lifetime.

For a Hindu, marriage is the only way to continue the family, and thereby repay, his debt to his ancestors. The most important thing is that all the Hindu God and Goddesses are also united in this. Marriage is for spiritual growth and a way of learning many things in life through experience. In other words, it is a perfect way of following the holy law of the Creator.
